History of Pasir Ris
Pasir Ris is a development area situated on the eastern side of Singapore. It borders with regions such as Sungei Serangoon, Upper Changi Road North, Tampines Expressway, and Serangoon Harbour. The area was formerly known for its kampongs and villages with little developments and as a popular destination for water skiing during the 1950s.
The name Pasir Ris is a Malay name for “white sand” that refers to the stretch of white sandy beaches lining the northeastern coast of Singapore. Its thought that the name comes from the shortening of Pasir Iris, with Pasir implying “sand” and Iris is referring to “to shred”. The name first came about in 1852 when a tiger reportedly killed a headman’s son.
Some of the kampongs that used to occupy the area in the early days include Kampong Bahru, Kampong Pasir Ris, and a number of Chinese kampongs situated along Elias Road. This region was popular due to its plantation estates such as Loh Lam Estate, Singapore United Plantations, Thai Min Estate, and Hun Yeang Estate.
Around the 1950s to 1970s, many people visited the beach in Pasir Ris for water skiing. Pasir Ris Hotel was also a popular venue for holding parties and various gatherings. Towards the end of the 1980s, the government developed Pasir Ris New Town, Aloha Loyang resorts and the Costa Sands.
Today, Pasir Ris consists of 7 sub-zones and occupies a total of about 1,533 ha. Some of the key areas popular with locals are the Downtown East and NTUC entertainment hub.
The undeveloped spaces were later allocated for recreational, industrial and residential use in a bid to develop the area. It was planned to be a coastal residential area featuring waterfront recreational facilities. The Housing and Development Board (HDB) built flats, and the first residents moved in 1988. The town’s population has since grown to register 111,000 HDB residents by March 2015.
The 2014 East Region Master Plan included the development of a cycling route network in the region that will enhance sustainable transport. The routes will allow residents to connect from their workplaces to home and amenities easily. They also link major parks and towns, including Pasir Ris, Bedok, and Tampines.
Currently, the town is receiving a facelift as it clocks 30 years old since it was developed. The plans are intended to rejuvenate Pasir Ris and make it more livable. HDB recently launched a megaproject on an about 3.8 ha hectare land. The land is situated at Pasir Ris town and close to the MRT. It is a “white site” for mixed development featuring integrated bus interchange, a town plaza, polyclinic and approximately 600 private condo units.
The addition of private housing in this area makes it appealing for living. Amenities are conveniently located, and the environment is calm, which makes Pasir Ris a perfect place for residents to get away from the busy day to day life and relax in a serene environment.
